After ten years of war, General Henry Holt wins and turns down a defeated envoy's late alliance offer. He plans to give up his military command and return to his daughter, Diana Holt, with gifts meant for her.
At home, Diana has already been pushed out. Eleanor Holt, Henry's adopted daughter, has taken Diana's status, courtyard, clothes, and jewels, and a fight over Diana's mother's hairpin ends with Eleanor accusing Diana of pushing her. The adopted sons—George, Richard, Edward, and Robert—side with Eleanor and send Diana to Mistrain Pavilion, a brothel, to teach her a lesson.
When Henry returns, Eleanor is wearing Diana's pearl and Gleamsilk and the phoenix hairpin he made for Diana. Eleanor claims to be Diana. Henry rejects the impostor and demands Diana's location. The adopted sons admit they sent Diana to Mistrain Pavilion.
Henry goes to Mistrain Pavilion and finds Diana badly injured and unconscious. Back at the Holt household, he confronts the family and Crown Prince Albert Stanley, Eleanor's intended. Henry holds Albert hostage and demands justice. Emperor Arthur Stanley arrives with troops and offers rare medicines for Diana, but Henry refuses to release Albert or let anyone leave until Diana wakes.
Henry then exposes Martha, Diana's wet nurse. Her injuries came from a debt collector after her son's gambling debts, not from Diana, and her accusation against Diana collapses. Henry also produces a letter from three years earlier proving that Diana, not Eleanor, saved Albert from a cliff during the royal hunt.
With the household's lies exposed, the fight for Diana widens beyond the Holt mansion. Henry’s revenge reaches the court, and the throne's treachery behind the swap becomes the deeper target.
