Remi goes to the Elf High King's wedding to catch her boyfriend Marcus—the king's nephew—with his real Elf girlfriend. She drags her friend Zaya along. Marcus dismisses Remi as a pastime from a border village. Then Remi slips down a slope, hits a cake, and the cake knocks the bride Priscilla, the sixth human bride, down. Priscilla dies.
Nilo makes Remi his seventh bride. Six brides before her died on their wedding days. Remi refuses, but the rite proceeds anyway; Nilo forces a convincing kiss by threatening her family. The wedding completes.
Afterward, Nilo's mother Elvais opposes the marriage—she chose the first six brides. Nilo argues his bloodline can resist the curse if Remi conceives an heir. He stops before consummation after recognizing the scar on Remi's body as the mark of the woman from his dreams. After he leaves, Remi finds drawings of herself from three months earlier. Later, Nilo and his brother Kade discuss the dream woman and the scar; Nilo suspects she was sent to him.
At midnight, Nilo is chained and the curse flares. Remi kisses him awake. Elvais accuses Remi of loosening the chains and has her taken before a tribunal. Priscilla's sister accuses Remi of murder to become queen; no spiritual bond exists, so Remi is not queen. Elvais sentences her to immediate execution, then gives Nilo a choice: preserve peace between humans and elves, or protect Remi. He chooses Remi: "No one takes her away today."
Later Remi collapses, appears dead, then revives. She names poison, not a curse. Elvais comes to finish her off, but Nilo arrives in time. Nilo vows to investigate who is behind the bride's blood, then tends to Remi. A therapist finds two powers tearing at her and says a spiritual bond with Nilo is the only way to keep her alive. The bond requires consummation. Remi agrees. Nilo makes clear there is no turning back—she will belong to him for the rest of her life.
