Sylvaine relives the day her first life fell apart. She remembers being poisoned by her sister Thessaly along with her child. Now, on the same Tidal Covenant Rite, Thessaly claims the Shark Lord Sylvaine once saved and married. Sylvaine becomes her handmaid and suffers her cruelty. When a sacred reef is damaged by volcanic current, Sylvaine swims in to stop it. She emerges burned, but Thessaly blames her. The covenant wardens hand Sylvaine over to the ancient Sea Serpent Sovereign Morvyn. He takes her away.
