Jane is the wolfless daughter of Alpha Victor and an outsider in her father's pack. Her human mother, Gayle, rejected the mate bond and left fourteen years ago. The pack sees Jane as the daughter of the traitorous human who abandoned their alpha. At eighteen, still without a wolf, she is a pariah. Alpha Victor asks her to make the Lycan Prince Callum and his cousin Fenwick feel welcome at Wolf Ridge Academy.
At school, Nicole, the popular queen bee, mocks Jane as a half breed and warns that Callum despises humans and half breeds, claiming a human hunter took his older brother's life. Callum arrives with Fenwick, announces he is only there because his father wants him to socialize with commoners, and has no intention of making friends. A run-in with Jane turns into insults. Fenwick introduces himself and recognizes Jane as Alpha Victor's daughter. Nicole warns Jane to stay away from them.
Professor Jackson pairs Jane with Callum in combat class. Callum objects to partnering with a human. Jane asks if he is afraid she will beat him. He calls her a filthy half breed and says humans are duplicitous, weak, and evil, then brings up her traitorous mother. Jane tells him he knows nothing about her mother. Callum orders,"Kneel before me," and uses his Lycan voice. Jane resists enough to call him a cheater and accuses him of using the voice because he could not take her down. He calls it a fraction of his strength and warns that his full power can raise armies.
Later, Fenwick offers Jane food. Jane asks why he is not ignoring her like everyone else. He suggests admirers may be afraid to ask out the Alpha's daughter. Callum interrupts and objects to Fenwick socializing with her. Jane calls him weak for bullying people for sport. Fenwick leaves. At home, Mary, the housekeeper of Moonstone Manor, announces the Lycan Prince is coming to dinner. At dinner, Callum insults his classmates and the academy for welcoming less favorable members of society. Jane challenges his arrogance. Victor apologizes for her language; he has always admired Jane's strong will. Callum answers that willful subjects cause trouble. Jane compares him to a dictator. Victor asks if something is going on between them. Jane denies it.
Callum asks Jane to be his guide at Wolf Ridge. Jane refuses. Victor accepts on her behalf. The next morning, Victor had to leave early, and Callum was supposed to take Jane to school. Jane refuses and prefers to walk. Callum notes Wolf Ridge is six miles away. Jane eventually asks for a ride. In the car, Callum teases her and calls her little mouse.
Jane and Callum keep colliding. She is the pack outsider. He is the Lycan Prince who despises humans and half breeds. Their heated exchanges spark a chemistry neither wants. Fate has other plans for them.
