Serafina and Freya are best friends reading a smut comic where the side characters share their names. The comic versions die horribly. They joke about it until they wake up inside the story.
Serafina is Aaron's substitute girlfriend, meant to smile like Elena and play the part. Freya is Lucius's arranged wife, told she'll eat a bullet if she ruins Elena's mood. Both men are blind to Elena's manipulation, and both women know where the plot is heading. Elena is back, which starts the clock on their deaths.
They fake everything. Freya performs devotion so convincingly that Lucius hands her divorce papers and a one-million-dollar check. Serafina learns the safe passcode from the comic and empties it. The former don offers gold to make them leave, and they fake heartbreak until the bribe rises to three boxes. Aaron stops the deal. The women take what they can and prepare to disappear.
Freya goes first. She signs the divorce papers and leaves. Word reaches Lucius that Freya is dead. He refuses to believe it, calls it a tantrum, then a lie. Serafina urges him to see Freya one last time. He doesn't know the coffin is empty. Serafina tries to stop him from opening it. Freya is already gone.
Serafina still has her own exit to stage. Staying means dying for real. The plan is reckless, but the alternative is the comic's ending. They run south with the money.
Three years later, the men they left behind find them. Lucius and Aaron are no longer angry. They're begging. They've finally seen Elena for what she is, and they want the women back. But the reunion won't be clean. Elena, the one both men once trusted, is a double agent. The truth doesn't set them free. It drags everyone back into the same trap.
