Eleanor Grant spent thirty years cooking, cleaning, and working for her son Wayne's family without pay. The house, the company, the tuition money came from her. None of them knew it. Then her granddaughter Joy came home from studying in Germany and called her an idiot, in German, at the dinner table.
Eleanor answered in German and repeated it back. Wayne's wife Mina called her ungrateful for lecturing them about dignity when all she did was cook and clean. Wayne agreed — just an old woman who cooks and cleans, someone they would be embarrassed to take anywhere in public. Eleanor declared she was done serving them and walked out. They let her go. She was broke. She could not even feed herself. She would crawl back in three days.
She did not. Wayne called repeatedly. She did not answer. She checked into a seven-star hotel in the Financial District, was recognized as a Black Diamond VIP, and got a private butler. She hired attorney Hale from Summit Law Firm to go through her late husband's documents. The records listed the Haven Foundation, worth over a hundred billion dollars, offshore accounts, and a townhouse on the Upper East Side. Under Mr. Grant's will she was the sole heir, and as of that day the chairwoman.
The lawyer's warning: her son's family would end up on the street with nowhere to go. "I want them homeless."
Her orders followed: take back every property in her name, including the Park Avenue apartment where Wayne lived, with a legal notice to vacate by the end of the day. Freeze every bank account and credit card she had authorized Wayne to use. Cancel Joy's scholarship at the University of Freiburg, where she studied high society etiquette culture, and have her expelled. She would attend the Haven Foundation investment gala the next day.
At the house, no one could cook. Joy complained she was hungry. Mina refused to clean. Wayne expected her to come begging once she ran out of cash.
At the gala, Wayne bragged about his daughter's German education and the Haven Foundation chair's billion-dollar investment in him, crediting his own talent and potential. His goal for the night was a long-term partnership. Hale walked over and served him the legal notice. The apartment was Eleanor's alone. Wayne had to vacate by the end of the day. Mina called it insane. Wayne believed his mother had lost her mind. Then the chairwoman of the Haven Foundation arrived. It was Eleanor.
