Lily Bennett steps onto the stage at Harrington University's honors ceremony for outstanding freshmen. The big screen flashes her chats with Ethan Hayes, the football captain. The messages read like extortion: send money, leave the door unlocked, or I'll ruin your reputation. Madison Black, student government vice president, calls Lily a gold digger who preys on men. Only Lily knows Ethan is her maternal uncle. Their grandmother had asked Ethan to look after Lily, and he gave her an authorized user card. On her first day, Ethan made her promise never to call him uncle or reveal their kinship on campus.

Ethan is away for a football match for three days. Madison moves fast. Lily's card—an authorized user card from Ethan—is frozen. Her honors eligibility is suspended. The campus forum turns her into a joke. Lily has nine dollars and forty cents left. Her roommate Chloe is the only one who believes her.

Ms. Harper, a school administrator, freezes Lily's honors eligibility and asks for a statement. Madison pushes for a public apology. Ashley, sent by Madison, tries to talk Lily into confessing. Lily refuses both. Madison even writes a confession for Lily to sign. Lily won't.

At a student voice event, Madison speaks and every eye lands on Lily. Then Ethan returns. Madison meets him first, reporting that she took care of the freshman who harassed him.

Ethan sees Lily's hand, scratched by Madison. He walks past Madison and says, "Lily Bennett is my niece. I gave her that card and I made her take the money."
