Betrayed Us All

Elara planned to start college at H-University with her twin brother Julian, best friend Theo, and Chloe. On decision day, all three went silent. She found a post from Maya, the scholarship girl her family foundation sponsors, showing the three of them taking Maya to the Hamptons. Elara opened Julian's iPad and found a private group chat with a poll: H-University with Elara or C-University with Maya. The vote was unanimous for C-University. Elara committed to a California university, three thousand miles away.

The three came back with gifts. Elara showed them Maya's post and the group chat. They argued Maya had no friends and would be terrified alone. Julian announced a graduation trip to Aspen. Elara found two more group chats without her, one for the vote and one for the vacation. Julian asked Elara to lend Maya her vintage necklace, the one her mother had fastened around her neck before she died. Elara refused.

At the graduation party, Chloe and Maya wore the same white dress. Theo gave Maya his blazer. Julian ordered no cilantro because Maya did not eat it, though he had once forced Elara to eat it. Maya claimed she saw a cheat sheet behind Elara's test ID on SAT day. Elara asked for details and mentioned legal consequences. Maya held out her phone, and the moment Elara touched it, Maya let go. It shattered. Julian demanded an apology. Maya reached for Elara's arm; Elara stepped back, Maya lurched, a bottle broke, and Maya went down with blood on her dress. Theo carried her out. Julian walked over, took Elara's phone, and smashed it on the floor. "Now you know what it feels like."

Elara walked home alone in the New York rain with no cash and no working phone. She collapsed by the elevator and woke in a private hospital with a high fever. Julian, Theo, and Chloe arrived. Julian asked whether the hospital was necessary. Maya came with lilies for a girl with a severe pollen allergy. Elara coughed until she ordered them out. Julian's parting instruction was to apologize when ready.

The day Elara was discharged, no one came. The penthouse was empty. They had left for Aspen. Their posts showed Maya under a snow-covered pine, smiling, wearing the vintage necklace. Elara deleted every contact and flew to California.

Later, the regret-stricken trio chased her. Elara firmly shut the door on their broken bonds and chose her own future.
