Lily stands at a subway entrance, the November wind cutting through her faded coat. Three minutes ago, her ex Derek walked past with his polished new girlfriend and smirked at how far she had fallen. She looks like someone no one notices—the kind of person this city, ruled by dragons above the clouds, leaves behind on the ground. Then her phone buzzes. Her best friend Hannah needs her to pick up a nephew from Ember Wheel Academy, an elite dragon school. Lily agrees, thinking nothing could possibly get worse. At the gate, surrounded by luxury cars and stone-faced butlers, she clutches a gas station hot cocoa and squints at a blurry photo. Down a dim side alley, a little boy with short golden hair and bright slit pupils stands alone, fingers red from the cold, wearing the calm of a child who learned too early that no one was coming. When she crouches down and offers him the cocoa, he eyes her with suspicion. "You're all the same," he says. "First you ask who I am, then you ask how much I'm worth." She doesn't push. She just presses the warm cup into his freezing hands. He takes a tiny sip. His ears turn pink. "It's too sweet," he mutters, but he doesn't pull away when she takes his hand.
Back at her tiny apartment, the boy—Ash—eats her braised ribs until tiny gold dragon horns poke through his hair. He steals fruit from the bowl during cartoons, pretending nothing happened. He hears Derek's voice message mocking Lily and tells her quietly, "He's wrong. You're not what he says you are." Then he secretly calls his brother. Half an hour later, a blazing streak of gold tears through the sky and crashes into the empty lot below. Sebastian Cross steps out of the dark—tall, gold-haired, his slit pupils carrying the quiet authority of someone the world learned to bow to. The second his eyes land on Lily, his entire body goes still. A pure radiant gold light rolls off him in silent waves. Ash's eyes go wide. This is the ancient bond signal, the one dragon blood gives off when a dragon comes face to face with his destined mate. "Brother, you like her," Ash announces gleefully. "Your face is red." Sebastian denies it, but he stays the night, eats an entire plate of ribs while pretending to be above it, and by morning, something possessive has already taken root. When Lily learns he is the Dragon King of both realms, she pulls back, ashamed of the gap between them. His response is immediate and absolute: "In this city, if I say we're from the same world, then we are." Before she can process the weight of those words, Derek corners her at a downtown cafe, sneering that no man with money or power would ever claim her in public. The windows explode outward. Sebastian walks in through the wreckage, gold light blazing, dragon authority slamming down so hard that Derek drops to his knees in the broken glass. He pulls Lily against him protectively, then looks down at the crumpled man and speaks like a verdict. "You said no man would ever claim her. Try saying that again."
