Ethan, an IT programmer, is dropped into a primitive wilderness. Beastfolk tribes survive by hunting and fire, and his coding skills are useless. He unlocks an encyclopedia and danger detection. The warning: the great winter arrives in forty-seven days, with minus-forty temperatures for one hundred eighty days. Without fire and food, the catfolk tribe faces extinction.
The catfolk’s fire died three days ago. The wolf-eared clan demands five baskets of meat for fire, and the great winter is close. Ethan tries friction fire. The tribe’s rule is that only a shaman can make it. Other girls steady the board and block the wind. Smoke comes, then flame. Ethan offers to teach all of them. The trade for sparks ends.
A catfolk girl falls into a severe fever after entering the river and not drying off. The tribe has no shaman. Ethan calls for clean water, boiled water, clean straw, and soft furs. He has her body wiped down, crushes tree bark, boils it, and gets her to drink. The fever breaks.
Ethan joins a hunt to learn how the tribe survives. Chloe, a rabbitfolk hunter, tracks prey and heals fast. At a water source, the wolf-eared clan claims the turf and orders the catfolk to leave. A wolf-eared clan member reminds Chloe about the meat-for-fire exchange; the catfolk already have their own fire, and the wolf warns the price will double next time. Ethan argues hunting is not just raw power and numbers. Traps, spears, and division of labor can let five or six hunters take down the Boar King. Chloe makes a bet with him: if he helps the girls kill it, the hunting party follows his lead. If he fails, he stays with the catfolk tribe forever.
The Boar King charges, and the group runs. Ethan reads its predictable charge, poor mobility, and low endurance. The girls pray he loses, then ask the Boar King not to hurt him. Ethan accepts the bet: "I never wanted to leave this place anyway." The hunt begins under his command tomorrow.
What waits beyond the Boar King is the wolf-eared clan, the founding of Lunara, and invaders who force the tribes to fight for survival. Fire, fever, and the hunt are only the opening. Ethan still has to bring the wolf-eared clan into a new tribe, Lunara, and lead it against foreign invaders.
