At seven, Emma Doyle drank poison intended for Stephen Grayson, leaving her mind frozen in childhood. Years later, hoping to surprise him, she sets off ahead to wait for him, but a bridal sedan mix-up sends her to the household of Governor Dylan Everett instead. Emma believes she has married Stephen, who had long treated her coldly and called her a fool, so she is surprised when this man shows her unexpected patience — offering her food, speaking gently, and listening when she asks for a plum tree and a swing. Stephen, meanwhile, realizes too late that Emma is missing and recalls how his attitude toward her soured after he began surrounding himself with accomplished, highborn women. A nightmare in which he sees Emma as Dylan's wife jolts him into action, and he sets out to find her, unaware that Dylan has already begun building the swing he promised.
