Cece Sherman, after being cut off by her parents, proposes a marriage of convenience to Adrian Blackwood—who is also her best friend Zoey's uncle—after hearing about his family's search for a bride. Adrian agrees, setting two conditions: a one-year, secret marriage, and that she must gain his grandfather's approval. Cece wins over the grandfather, who promises a substantial wedding gift upon proof of marriage. Adrian gives Cece a sum of money and sets a meeting at the county clerk's office. In a private moment, Adrian tells his butler the one-year term is to ensure Cece doesn't feel trapped and will be financially secure regardless. Later, Cece and Zoey have a confrontation with a drug dealer at a club. During the altercation, Cece claims association with Adrian, which leads to him being notified and arriving at the scene.
