Gianna Scuderi is the daughter of Rocco Scuderi, head of the Chicago Mafia. Her sister Aria is married off to Luca, a notorious Mafia Capo. Gianna fears she is next. Aria urges her to run, but Gianna refuses to let their father force Aria into her place. She vows to marry for love or die trying.
At Aria's wedding, Rocco orders Gianna to dance with arms dealers. She refuses and chooses death over being sold. Matteo Vitiello, Luca's younger brother and the family's god of blades, steps in. His knife display nearly hits her. He apologizes and takes her hand to dance.
Matteo flirts with Gianna. She has never been touched. He offers his hand in marriage, then clarifies he means his literal hand. Matteo brings his plan to Luca: marry Gianna, and tell Rocco he wants to make her pay, so Rocco will agree.
Two Mafia men corner Gianna and try to assault her. Matteo stops them and punishes one. Gianna calls all Mafia men monsters. Matteo defends the blood oath as how they keep women and the family safe. He kisses her. She calls it a one-time thing, something forbidden. He promises to prove her wrong.
Matteo comes to Gianna at night, thinking about her since they kissed. He wants to be her first. He asks if she is ready.
