I'll Be Better Without You opens with Luke returning home after nine months away, eager to reunite with Jane and Emma—the Cole sisters he grew up with, the only family he has left. Years ago, after losing his parents, they made a pact: after graduation, he would choose one of them. But in his absence, someone else took his place.

At Wade's championship party, Luke is met with cold stares and cruel chants. A slice of cake laced with peanuts sends him into an allergic collapse.
